Community Service

A big part of the Young Marine program is community service. A certain number of community service hours are required every year and required in some cases, to earn the next rank. Our unit works closely with the local Marines Corps League-Col. Justice Chambers Detachement in Mentor. Some of the past events include the Sunday Morning Breakfasts at Gunny’s Hall, the Toys-4-Tots drive at the Great Lakes Mall, the Rose Program, and the M.S. Walk in Mentor.

Our unit has also participated in various community service activities with the Lake Metroparks including clean up at Fairport Harbor Beach and volunteering to be “actors” in one of the Lake Farmpark Haunted Hayride scenes. Some of our Young Marines have earned community service hours on their own by volunteering at church, tutoring fellow classmates at school, and helping elderly neighbors with yard work.

As a community service gesture, our unit purchased bricks in memory of two local Marines who were killed in Iraq. The bricks are part of the walkway at the National Marine Corps Museum in Washington, D.C.

Earning Credit for Community Services Performed

Each Young Marine is responsible for keeping track of all activities (parades, community service, unit trips, etc.) he or she participates in and is responsible for giving a list of these to Ms. Conroy. This will ensure he or she receives proper credit for these activities.

Young Marines can record the information on the inside covers of their training books or you might consider purchasing a spiral bound notebook used specifically for this purpose.

Please keep in mind that community service (50 hours required per calendar year for promotion consideration) includes any service your Young Marine provides which he or she does not receive monetary compensation for. For example: raking leaves or cutting the grass for an elderly neighbor, assisting with Meals on Wheels, helping out at church, marching in parades with the Young Marines, etc. If you have any questions, contact Ms. Conroy.

Other Opportunities?

Do you have a community service opportunity that you would like our Young Marines to help with? Our unit is always looking for ways we can help the surrounding communities. If so, we'd love to hear from you. Please contact Mr. Sickles, Phone: 440.413.6707 to check the unit's availability.
